I hope you all had a Happy Easter Season and Spring Break. Your children came back to school with a lot of stories of the fun they had last week. We are in the home stretch of the last 7 weeks of Kindergarten! We will do our best to work hard, play hard, learn a lot, and have even more fun.
Next Tuesday, 4/16 begins my most exciting time of the year - our eggs will arrive, and 21 days after that we will have chicks! We will learn about the life cycle of the chick as well as many new vocabulary words, such as "oviporous", which means hatched from an egg. Later this spring we will also observe caterpillars going through metamorphosis and we will do some planting.
Our literacy curriculum is going very well, and we are moving on to more challenging information. The class is getting into our routine, and is eager to learn. As you have seen, a take home sheet will be in your child's folder almost daily. These do not need to be sent back to school. In the Skills segment we continue to work on consonant clusters and tricky words. Our "sound wall" is up in the room. The final group is long vowels, and will be coming soon. Individual sounds are being taught, as well as handwriting practice. We are learning about sentence structure and how to write a complete sentence. I am really seeing nice progress in reading. The Unit 8 tricky words list will be sent home this week. In the Knowledge segment, we are finishing up our Weather & Seasons unit. Next up is How to Care for the Earth, which coincides with Earth Day. In May we will learn a bit about Columbus & the Explorers and American Landmarks while also doing a few fun writing actiities.
In Math we are continue to focus on numbers 1 - 10 and beyond. We count objects, recognize numbers, and are learning proper number formation in writing. We do several math concepts each day, as we focus on the calendar, how many days we have been in school, how many friends are in attendance, etc. We have begun looking at ten frames, comparing one more/one less, and counting groups of objects. We are in Module 5, which leads into subtraction. Now that we can compose numbers (5+5=10), we are learning to decompose (10-5=5).
In our Second Step curriculum we are learning strategies for how to calm down when we feel uncomfortable or negative emotions. We have started the final unit, How to Solve Problems. Mrs. Dickman, our Social Worker will be in this Friday to teach the Child Protection lesson. It is a simple lesson that reminds students of ways to be safe.
We are working on our iPads a couple times a week. They of course have also been used with Mrs. Bianchi in Technology, as well as a free tech time in class. We will continue to explore the apps and proper etiquette. The class is enjoying Dojo Island, a game that allows them to interact with each other. I am also working with tech to install a few more apps that are helpful. I sent home a sheet with login information for you to be able to access our child's seesaw and see what he/she is doing. You can also "like" their work and leave a comment!
