Students at Northeast Elementary School had a special surprise celebration on Friday October 27th to kick off Native American Heritage Month. One of our Northwest families, who are from Native American decent, volunteered to come in to discuss their traditions, showcase traditional dances, and explain the meaning behind the pieces of their clothing. They explained how the beat of the drum matches the beat of the heart, which they consider the heartbeat of the Earth.
As a part of our strategic plan in district 124, we strive to bring awareness of all cultures, languages, and diverse backgrounds to our students and families. By bringing awareness of our differences, we allow all students to feel included in our Northeast family, as well as prepare students to be empathetic and informed members of a diverse society. We believe it's in our differences that we find our strength here at Northeast!
